The latest sculpture in Andrew Wang’s Strong Woman series celebrates women’s pursuit of physical strength in a move away from traditional views on femininity. The subjects are his CrossFit coaches, who train to test their physical limits, and nurture a growing community who crave this empowerment. This physical revolution in women comes decades after the socio-economic one, but do age-old biases still linger?
The aesthetic is purposefully stark with an oxidized iron. Iron was chosen as it is dug from the earth, refined to great strength and beauty through an arduous process, yet it is vulnerable to time and nature.
