Drystone on White Oak
In 1976, one of the world’s most beloved classical guitar virtuosos, Andre Segovia, performed, at the age of 84, at the Alhambra palace in Granada, Andalusia, Spain.
In the time capsule of an event, Segovia played one of his favorite pieces, “The Legend of Asturias” by Isaac Albeniz. The piece, the performance and the setting have become legendary.
It was in fact a favorite of my young parents, both being trained classical guitarists in their own right. My father passed early, and my mother ultimately turned the page on playing herself, but they gifted the love of Segovia to me as a young child.
This sculpture attempts to imagine and capture one watchful soul’s experience in time, and personify the haunting beauty of an event a lifetime ago. Most importantly, it is an homage to music’s ability to affect, and persist, moving with wonder and elegance through lives and generations.
